In Memory of Dr. Okechukwu Nwangburuka, M.D. ("Dr. Okey")
Founder of Restpadd Inc. and Restpadd Health Corp.
Dr. Okechukwu Nwangburuka, affectionately known as “Dr. Okey,” was the visionary founder of Restpadd Inc. (est. 2013) and Restpadd Health Corp. (est. 2015). A dedicated and highly respected psychiatrist, Dr. Okey devoted his life to advancing mental health care, particularly for underserved and vulnerable populations.
Born in Nigeria, Dr. Okey demonstrated exceptional academic promise early on. He attended the College of Medicine at the University of Maiduguri, graduating with distinction in Microbiology and receiving the prestigious Best Student Award in Preventative and Community Health. His passion for medicine and commitment to community well-being would guide his life's work.
In 1994, Dr. Okey immigrated to the United States, where he completed his residency at Allegheny University Hospitals in Philadelphia, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at The Ohio State University. Over the course of his career, he earned an impressive five board certifications in Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine—an achievement that reflected his depth of knowledge and dedication to his field.
Dr. Okey relocated to California in 2000, where he emerged as a leading voice in mental health care. His unique specialization in adolescent psychiatry positioned him as a champion for youth and families navigating mental health challenges. His leadership led to the expansion of services at county mental health hospitals to better support the complex needs of adolescents.
In addition to serving as the Medical Director of a prominent inpatient psychiatric facility, Dr. Okey designed and implemented innovative care programs that were both compassionate and clinically effective. His approach combined medical excellence with an unwavering commitment to human dignity.
In 2013, while facing his own personal health battle with ALS—a diagnosis he received that same year—Dr. Okey founded Restpadd Inc., followed by Restpadd Health Corp. in 2015. Despite the challenges of his illness, he continued to lead with vision, empathy, and strength. Under his leadership, Restpadd became a trusted provider of high-quality behavioral health services, grounded in the principles of respect, integrity, and holistic care.
Dr. Okey was also a published author, writing extensively about both mental health and his personal journey with ALS. Above all, he was a devoted father to his four children, whom he considered his greatest source of pride and purpose.
Dr. Okey passed away in January 2025. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy endures through the ongoing work of Restpadd and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable career. His life was a testament to resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to healing—values that continue to guide our mission today.
